That is because corded phones work with a six volt current that runs trough the telephone line. And when power goes down in your neighbourhood, its not likely to have gone down too in the telephone central, miles away from your house. (Or if by any chance it has, the phone central has backup generators in line)
Cordless phones use this current too, but they also need to be plugged in to your wall to get the additional power they need to transmit the radio signal between the handset and its base station.

i bought a corded phone a while back just for that reason – as well as knowing i’m not going to have neighbors electronically eavesdropping (at least not on my end).
Only problem is, i don’t have landline service – only VoIP – so if the cable goes out, i’m SOL.
funny – how many times have we made a decision impulsively where it turned out bad than good?…. i think the ratio is not in our favor. Impulsive behavior can sure get you into trouble!
