Songs of the Week

Neil StraussThe Loop

First of all, I should start posting the articles I write on the blog,
so will do so starting today in The Loop.

Here’s the latest, a fun and really interesting immersion into the
life of an artist that, previously, no one knew much about:

Skrillex: Eight Wild Nights and Busy Days With the Superstar

A number of you have written either saying you love the music, hate
it, or don’t know anything about it.

For those who are still in the dark, here’s a quickstart guide to the
“gateway songs” of the latest incarnation of dubstep. (Sometimes
purists will say a certain kind of music isn’t dubstep, and my theory
is because in the UK, ever since acid house changed the culture there
25 years ago, they don’t allow dance genres to evolve; instead, as
soon as a style changes, they give it a new name, which is part of
what’s kept it underground.)

So, that aside, here are the remixes I play for people to get them
into the music. Don’t “youtube skim” the songs: Turn up the volume,
let it build, and wait for the drop a little over a minute in. Play
loud:

Nero, “Promises” (Nero and Skrillex remix)

Benny Benassi featuring Gary Go, “Cinema” (Skrillex remix)

Freestylers featuring Belle Humble, “Cracks” (Flux Pavillion remix)

Rusko featuring Amber Coffman, “Hold On” (Sub Focus remix)

Example, “Kickstarts” (Bar 9 Remix)

Nneka, “Heartbeat” (Chase & Status Remix)

Are you in yet? Download these songs, and play them loud in your car.

And let me know when you’re ready, and I’ll upload my favorite non-pop
dubstep tracks.

As a bonus, here’s a mash-up: Rusko’s “Hold On” and DJ Khaled’s “All I
Do Is Win.” Has the party hook of the year. This isn’t the best
version, because it hasn’t been officially released by any of the DJs
playing it in the clubs, but it’s a decent approximation. Would be a
smart move for DJ Khaled to get release an official remix:
